ENERGY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES IN MISSISSIPPI Mississippi organizations have played a large role in education and outreach regarding renewable energy and energy efficiency. With prospective audiences ranging from the business community to elementary students to environmental stewards, these events represent a growing community that is engaged with the energy sustainability sector. The activities below were held after the introduction of the 2011 Mississippi Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Report, which was in May, 2011. "Careers in Energy Week" Proclamation A proclamation was made by Governor Haley Barbour to declare the week of October 11-17, 2011 as "Careers in Energy Week" in Mississippi. This effort was spearheaded by the Mississippi Energy Workforce Consortium (MEWC). In conjunction with the proclamation, the Consortium conducted an essay competition for six middle schools around the state. The contest which awarded several Apple iPods as prizes was sponsored by Entergy Mississippi, Mississippi Power Company and Mississippi Technology Alliance.
